Root – One Local Eatery, Day by Day, One Week at a Time
This is our ninth week featuring one local, Rhode Island eatery. We will share the background of each and a little bit about the owners and operators. Most importantly, we will be sharing a link to purchase their gift cards. If you are able to support these small local businesses at this time, we encourage you to purchase their gift cards online, support their fundraisers and/or order takeout or delivery.
This is a particularly difficult time for both the tourism and restaurant industry, we are seeing many of our restaurant partners and friends in these industries struggle to keep their businesses. By featuring one local eatery each week, we hope to support and uplift some of our partners and friends. No matter where you live, local eateries bring so much vibrancy to our communities.
Welcome to Root
Root is a vegan whole plant-based eatery and juice bar located right on Broadway, offering juice, smoothies, toasts, bowls, snacks, soups, and lots of other delicious menu options for a juice bar/vegan eatery. They believe in healthy living through the power of juicing and eating, putting together a menu that not only satisfies their health standards but also everyone’s taste buds. Kate and Paul Webber, the owners and operators behind Root opened the eatery in November 2018. They worked hard to put together a succulent Vegan menu like you have never seen before, since most of their menu items were created and refined from scratch by Kate. Root is a great addition to the edgy Broadway neighborhood and you can usually find at least one of them behind the counter if not both.
One of their most popular bowls is the Arriba Arriba! Served over kale, quinoa or brown rice. Topped with Cumin spiced black beans, roasted sweet potatoes, red onion, cherry tomatoes, house pickled jalapeños, avocado, and cilantro with house made agave lime dressing. Amazing! Don’t take it from us, just read Rachael W’s 5 Star review! “This cafe has the best plant-based menu. I’m in town for two weeks of training and have visited four times so far. The Arriba! Arriba! Bowl is absolutely delicious. But I was blown away by the coconut BLT and chickpea salad sandwiches. Perfection. Lots of smoothies and breakfast bowls available, as well as delicious hot and cold drinks, including an iced caramel chocolate oat-based nitro coffee and “dreamer” which has lavender. Since I don’t drink coffee, they made it with just oat milk. Very accommodating owner and staff. They have veggie puffs snacks to accompany your meal, as well as sweet baked goods like rocky road brownies and strawberry oat bars. Both are drool worthy. (They also offer a military discount.). Can’t recommend this place enough!” Says it all right there!
Root is not only vegan (no cheese, no milk, no dairy) but also Kosher Certified through the help of Rabbi Marc Mandel of Touro Synagogue.
At the start of the Coronavirus, Root was closed for renovations. At the end of March, they reopened for contactless takeout and delivery. They are now open for takeout and delivery every day, 10 am – 3 pm until they are fully operational again. They are delivering within a 3-mile radius of their Broadway store, although delivery is also available through GrubHub and DoorDash. You can order online and the Root team will have your order ready for take out or delivery!
You can help support Root by ordering take out or purchasing gift cards.
Here are two items we love from Root’s menu:
“Green with Envy” Smoothie
Avocado, kale, mango, orange, lime and mint
Roasted eggplant, grated carrot, scallions, shelled edamame, sesame seeds, nori slivers, vegan kimchi, and avocado served with Ginger Miso Dress
