Mission – One Local Eatery, Day by Day, One Week at a Time

This is our seventh week featuring one local, Rhode Island eatery. We will share the background of each and a little bit about the owners and operators. Most importantly, we will be sharing a link to purchase their gift cards. If you are able to support these small local businesses at this time, we encourage you to purchase their gift cards online, support their fundraisers and/or order takeout or delivery.

This is a particularly difficult time for both the tourism and restaurant industry, we are seeing many of our restaurant partners and friends in these industries struggle to keep their businesses. By featuring one local eatery each week, we hope to support and uplift some of our partners and friends. No matter where you live, local eateries bring so much vibrancy to our communities.

Welcome to Mission

Neighborhood: Newport

The mission is simple: good grub, good food and good vibes. Mission is a casual burger and hot dog joint. Their menu couldn’t be simpler – there are three hot dogs and five burger options. Their belief is always quality over quantity. All ingredients are sourced locally and they put a serious effort into using the freshest ingredients and even their dogs are made in house!

Mission was opened in November 2013 by Newport natives. Sisters Ali, Julia, and Anna opened Mission along with their husbands Pat, Chad, and Tyler. The Mission crew also owns and operates Winner Winner, Thames Street Kitchen and a second Mission location in Middletown. Watch for The Mission Group’s newest restaurant “Nomi Park” set to open this year in the new Wayfinder Hotel. We hear warm buttered lobster on a toasted roll with their infamous hand cut fries are on their menu!

There is a great story behind Mission’s name. The name Mission goes all the way back to the Prohibition era. The original Mission was a speakeasy, sailor’s bar, and watering hole for blue-collar workers. A local character named Billy Goode owned the joint and he was the first person to be arrested in RI under the National Prohibition Act . Later after a fire at the original Mission the bar was moved up the street to its new location and it was called Billy Goode’s Tavern which became notable for its live music. Many a story over the years came out of  Billy Goode’s over the years, it closed in 2012. When the Newport natives opened Mission, they wanted to honor its namesake and keep the spirit alive.

Since the start of the Coronavirus, Mission Newport has closed, while Mission Middletown remains open and has adapted to offer takeout only. However, that hasn’t stopped their collaborations with PVD Donuts. They recently offered “donut burgers” on their takeout menu! Stay tuned to this creative and fun group – you never know what they will come up with next!

Mission Middletown is open for takeout every day, 11 am – 9 pm.

You can help support Mission by ordering takeout or purchasing gift cards.

Here are three items we love from Mission’s menu:

Chicago Dog
relish, onion, dill pickle, celery salt and mustard

Bacon Cheeseburger
lettuce, raw onion and “mission sauce”

Falafel
served on a toasted pita with shaved veggie salad of radish, onion, fennel and preserved lemon & tzatziki Sauce

PS: don’t forget to add those hand-cut fries!

It’s that time of year — Best of RI 2020 is here!

We could use a little extra love right now as our food tours are paused. Please take the time to vote for the best team we could ask for in Rhode Island Monthly’s Best of RI!

Write us in under “Statewide Local Tour” category! Voting ends May 31.
