Best of Rhode Island on a Budget – 11 Things to Do in March

We’re always looking for fun and interesting things to do in Rhode Island, no matter if you live here or are just visiting. Most of the time we’re looking for fun, interesting AND cheap things to do in R.I. To make your lives (and ours!) easier, we’ve put together a list of 10 budget-friendly things to do in Rhode Island for the month of March.

RISD Museum
FREE Admission every Sunday (10 am – 5 pm) and on every third Thursday of each month (5 pm – 9 pm)

The RISD Museum’s free admission nights are year round, but March is the perfect time to stop by. New England weather can be unpredictable, but the Museum is fun rain, shine or snow! If it’s a nice day, take a stroll down and around Benefit Street to admire the historic architecture.

Regular admission for the RISD Museum is as follows: 
Adults: $12
Seniors (age 62+): $10
Youth (ages 5-18): $3
Children under 5: free
College students: $5 with valid college ID

The RISD Museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10 am – 5 pm.

Botanical Center at Roger Williams Park
FREE for Providence residents every first Saturday of the month

Visiting the Botanical Center is a great way to be with nature without having to be outdoors. Not to mention that it is absolutely beautiful! The Botanical Center is home to the largest indoor display gardens in New England. Adventure through the four gorgeous greenhouses. The entire center is about 12,000 square feet so there is plenty to see. Stop and smell the flowers at the Botanical Center at Roger Williams Park!

Regular admission for the Botanical Center at Roger Williams Park is as follows: General admission (ages 13-64): $5
Children 6-12: $2
Children under 6: free

The Botanical Center is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Last ticket is sold at 3:30 pm.

Hot & Cold Wax Exhibition at Spring Bull Gallery

The Spring Bull Gallery in Newport is frequently described as “cozy” and “inviting.” It’s a great little gallery nestled in bustling Newport. Each month they feature a new exhibit. This month’s Hot & Cold Wax Exhibit features artists with an expertise in beeswax. Finely ground pigments of color are added to beeswax which the artist then paints with. Heat and cold are used throughout the creative process to create a translucent, layered look. The Hot & Cold Wax Exhibit runs until March 30.

The Spring Bull Gallery is open every day 12 pm – 5 pm.

Foolproof Brewery Tastings 
$5 Tastings Every Thursday-Sunday

Foolproof Brewery in Pawtucket offers $5 tastings every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Tasters receive four 4-oz beer samples. Foolproof is all about the beer experience. Sip and savor their thoughtfully created brews. Foolproof is not your average beer. Flavors include a Peanut Butter Porter, Raspberry IPA, and a Chocolate-Oyster Stout. If you taste something you love, all of their brews are available for purchase on location.

Foolproof Brewery Tastings occur Thursday and Friday 4 pm – 7 pm as well as Saturday and Sunday 1pm – 6pm.

Collaborative Year in Review Celebration
FREE. Donation suggested.

The Collaborative in Warren is celebrating its one-year anniversary with a FREE weekend bash. Join the celebration March 24 – 26. The Collaborative is a non-profit arts organization that supports, encourages, and celebrates the diverse talents in Rhode Island. Local artists share their work and collaborate on new projects. The three-day celebration kicks off on Friday, March 24 with a live performance from Josh Grabert and The Vamps. The festivities start at 1 pm on Saturday, March 25 for an open house and anniversary celebration. Sunday, March 26 is the start of Student Art Exhibit: Self at 1 pm. Also don’t miss the monthly performances of “Words at The Fort” on March 27 starting at 7.  Works from current Collaborative members will be on display all weekend.

The Collaborative on Main St., Warren is celebrating it’s one-year anniversary March 24 – 27. The festivities are free and open to the public.

Friday Night Live
$5 at the door

Friday Night Live is an all-ages improv comedy show performed by the Everett Company Stage School on the East Side of Providence. The show runs every Friday at 7 pm until June 9, so get there while you still can! The cast is a diverse group of young up-and-coming performers ready to entertain. It’s a fun night of comedy and spontaneity. You never know exactly what’s going to happen next at Friday Night Live. The

Shows take place every Friday at 9 Duncan Avenue, Providence, at 7 pm until June 9, 2017. 

Food Tours are always a budget-friendly way to experience a variety of restaurants while fulfilling your gastronomic needs for the day with enough food for a very satisfying lunch. Rhode Island Red Food Tours offers the Newport Neighborhood and Downcity Providence Food Tours. Taste your way through historic Newport or lively Downcity Providence! Tours start up April 21st and tickets can be purchased ahead of time here.

Tools of Treasure Exhibit 

$10 at the Providence Jewelry Museum

Tools of Treasure is an exhibit at the Providence Jewelry Museum in Cranston. The Providence Jewelry Museum is a hidden gem. They are dedicated to preserving America’s jewelry and sharing the industry’s history. They have the largest jewelry archive in the world! Tools of Treasure is on exhibit every Friday until April 30. The exhibit showcases jewelry and the tools behind each piece. It’s the first time jewelry has been on exhibit with the tools that helped create it. This is a one-of-a-kind experience, just like the jewelry on display.

The Providence Jewelry Museum is open 10 am – 3 pm on Fridays. The Tools of Treasure Exhibit is on display until April 30.

Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival
$12/show at the Avon Cinema

The Avon Cinema is hosting the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival on March 26. The Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival is on tour with the best films of 2016. All six films are VTeddy Award Winners. There are three showtimes that feature two films. Shows are at 3 pm, 5:30 pm, and 8:00 pm on March 26. Stay all day or catch the showing that speaks the most to you!

Flight Night at Brix Restaurant
$10 Flight every Wednesday

Flight Night at Brix Restaurant is a fan favorite. Enjoy a personal tasting of four wines or four draft beers for $10 on Wednesdays. Just remember to book it ahead of time so that Brix knows you’re coming! Pair your flight with a cheese or small plate. Cheese plates come with seasonal fruits, sliced bread, and homemade jams. Small plates include truffle fries, lamb bacon toast, and Maine mussels. If you’re hungry for more, Brix offers delicious large plates as well. Liven up your Wednesday night with flights at Brix!

Flight Night is every Wednesday at Brix Restaurant in Middletown, RI. Brix is open for dinner 5 pm – 9 pm on Wednesdays.

The Bit Players: Award-Winning Improv Comedy $18 General Admission

The Bit Players are Rhode Island’s most awarded comedy group. Their performances are modeled after the popular TV show, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Audience suggestions determine the course of the show and no two performances are the same. Shows are every Friday and Saturday at the Firehouse Theatre in Newport. More shows are added in July and August. Shows are always BYOB! Bring a canned good or non-perishable food item to any Friday show and receive $3 off your ticket. Laugh a lot with the Bit Players in Newport!

The Bit Players perform every Friday and Saturday at 8 pm. All performances take place at The Firehouse Theatre in Newport, RI.

Newport Seal Watch Cruise
$22 for non-members
$17 for Save the Bay members, seniors, and children age 3-12

Newport Seal Watch Cruises go until April, so take advantage of this fun and unique experience! Climb aboard one of Save the Bay’s education vessels to explore the historic Newport Harbor. Catch the seals lounging on Citing Rock off Rose Island and the Newport Bridge. Save the Bay offers similar tours out of Westerly, RI and Fall River, MA.
