Rhode Island’s cafes and bakeries are perfect for everything from a quick cup of coffee to weekend brunch. Belle’s Cafe in Newport and Ellie’s Bakery in Providence are two of our fan-favorite food tour stops in Newport and in Providence. Belle’s Cafe is dockside dining in the heart of The Newport Shipyard, a luxury yacht facility. Ellie’s Bakery is a cozy, charming spot in Downcity Providence, reminiscent of a french bakery cafe. Both are food tour stand-outs and perfect stops for breakfast, lunch, or the best of both worlds – brunch!

Belle’s Cafe
Newport Shipyard, 1 Washington Street in Newport, Rhode Island

Belle’s Cafe is Newport’s best-kept-secret. Their outdoor, dockside dining is definitely where it’s at. For the cooler fall days, they do have indoor seating. The relaxed, fun atmosphere is just the beginning. Their food is absolutely delicious! They offer classic and New England-inspired plates.

For breakfast and just to start they offer buttermilk pancakes and a Portuguese-style Azores Omelet, a tip of the hat to chef Allen Ferreira’s heritage.

For lunch,  it’s all about the local seafood. Belle’s has a Catch of the Day, Twin Lobster Rolls, Crab Cake Sandwich, and Clam Chowder, just what you would hope for on a sunny day by the bay in New England. Rumor has it that Belle’s is home to some of the best lobster rolls in Newport… Totally drool worthy! Brunch is served up on Saturdays and Sundays and the Slammin’ Shipyard Sandwich is high the list. With over a dozen options, everyone’s sure to leave satisfied.

Dining dockside at Belle’s Cafe.

Their food is absolutely delicious, they even only organic, free range eggs. but we just have to rave some more about their dockside dining. It’s like you’re dining dockside in the lap of luxury beside some of the most lavish boats in the world! Belle’s Cafe is everything you would expect a Newport cafe to be – delicious food and scenic dining. Their outdoor dining area is dog-friendly, so bring your well-behaved furry friend along for lunch!

First time eating New England clam chowder at Belle’s Cafe!

While your strolling through Newport’s Yachting Hub, be sure to stop in Newport Shipyard Ship Store . A carefully curated collection of everything from yachting clothing and gear to cutting boards and wine carriers, emblazoned with the popular logo of the Shipyard you see all over Newport. Just to say you were there!

The Newport Shipyard has many sailing and charity events as well as boat shows throughout the year so, be sure to check their calendar of events. Also, keep in mind Belle’s Cafe closes at 3 so they do offer the cafe and dock for private catered events later in the day because simply once your here, you don’t want to go anywhere else!

Things you find at The Newport Shipyard.

Whether you are a native Rhode Islander or visitor, Belle’s Cafe is a must-stop. Bring visiting friends and family to show them one of the best in Newport. Or stop by to get in on Newport’s best-kept-secret.

P.S. Keep your eyes open, you never know who might be crossing your path 😉.

Belle’s Cafe is open daily March through December, 7 am – 3 pm. Brunch is offered on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ellie’s Bakery
61 Washington Street in Providence, Rhode Island

Posing with the Ellie’s Bakery chicken.

Ellie’s Bakery is a cozy, charming Parisian-inspired bakery in downtown Providence. They offer breakfast, lunch, and a wide variety of cakes and pastries. All of their food is heavenly, from their popular buttery croissants to their house cured pork belly sandwiches on baguettes, but their pastries are where it is at. Macarons, bouchons, croissants – oh my! Ellie’s offers their signature seasonal and classic macarons. Their signature collection is pistachio, chocolate & peanut butter, and lemon lavender. Their seasonal collection is inspired by what’s fresh and will soon change now that fall’s arrived. These can be specially packaged in various denominations and can also be customized with initials for bridal showers and weddings. Beautiful!

Pretty boxed custom macaron favors for weddings.

For those who haven’t experienced the magic of a Bouchon, it is a bite-sized chocolate pastry, shaped like a cork that tastes like a molten chocolate lava cake. We serve them up on our Downcity Providence Tour and it is common for our guests to return to Ellie’s for another taste and some!

Pastry Chef Melissa Denmark has been voted a Starchef Rising Star in Coastal New England, Food & Wine’s Top 50 New Pastry Chefs for 2012 and most recently made Zagat’s 2017 National list of “30 under 30 Rock Stars Redefining the Industry” . She executes her tremendous talent and vision with passion and focus at both Gracie’s and Ellie’s Bakery.

Our food tour reservation is waiting.

Most of Ellie’s offerings are seasonal and will change on a monthly basis. All ingredients are locally and mindfully sourced. Some of their ingredients even come from their downtown, rooftop garden! For breakfast, enjoy a breakfast sandwich made with locally-sourced eggs and homemade English muffin. As for lunch, we recommend the Baffoni Chicken Salad Sandwich or Seasonal Salad, you can’t go wrong here no matter what you get!

Sucree anyone?

Calling all bakers and pastry lovers – Ellie’s Bakery regularly offers classes. The Enchanting Macaron is offered twice in October, so reserve your spot now! And just in time for the holidays, Ellie’s is offering Holiday Cookie Baking in November. Also, never to let a sugar event go by, we highly recommend “Sucree: Spooky Celebrations of Sweets” Sunday, October 29th at Gracie’s. An amazing night of cocktails and signature dessert courses by three of Providence’s noted Pastry Chefs. Having been to the Sucree: Seaside Garden Party this summer, I assure you, you will love it!

You are sure to learn a thing or two from Ellie’s experienced bakers.

If tasting is more your thing, Ellie’s Bakery is open Monday – Saturday, 7 am to 5 pm.
