Perro Salado – One Local Eatery, Day by Day, One Week at a Time
This is our fifth week featuring one local, Rhode Island eatery. We will share the background of each and a little bit about the owners and operators. Most importantly, we will be sharing a link to purchase their gift cards. If you are able to support these small local businesses at this time, we encourage you to purchase their gift cards online, support their fundraisers and/or order takeout or delivery.
This is a particularly difficult time for both the tourism and restaurant industry, we are seeing many of our restaurant partners and friends in these industries struggle to keep their businesses. By featuring one local eatery each week, we hope to support and uplift some of our partners and friends. No matter where you live, local eateries bring so much vibrancy to our communities.
Welcome to Perro Salado
We know you just missed Cinco de Mayo, but truth be told there’s always a party going on at Perro Salado!
Perro Salado was established in 2007. It is owned by a three-person team: Dan Hall (co-owner and executive chef), Andi Johnson (co-owner and general manager), and Russ Hall (co-0wner and president.) But make no mistake – most of the staff is like family, having worked there for years. They are led by Geralyn Burke, the wizard that runs it like a well-oiled machine!
Perro Salado means “Salty Dog” an apt name for an old sea and sailing port! It is meant to convey a vibrant Mexican restaurant serving fresh, authentic cuisine. We think they hit the nail on the head!
Andi’s artistic eye transformed a historic 18th-century Naval officer’s home in the heart of Newport into a casual and boisterous gathering space. Earthy colors saturate walls, and the whimsical decor make each of the cozy rooms jump to life with fiesta-like energy. Behind the bar, Andi’s experience as a mixologist turns classic margaritas into bold and fresh concoctions as exciting and remarkable as a great glass of wine. Their extensive Tequila selection will leave you dizzy – literally! It was Dan’s brother, Russ, who always had the lifelong dream to own a restaurant. On a trip to Mexico he developed a love of authentic Mexican cuisine, and realized there wasn’t much of it at all in Rhode Island. Harnessing Dan’s 30+ yrs of restaurant experience working in everything from western truck stops to french nouvelle restaurants and Andi’s creative talents, Russ found the Perro Salado concept a home and helped it bloom. Together, they have created a modern interpretation of Mexican flavors with their own twist using the freshest local, organic produce and ingredients available.
During the Coronavirus, Perro Salado transitioned to offering takeout every night from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m and are preparing to open on a limited basis soon! Just pull right up to their front door and one of their servers will bring your order right to your car. You won’t want to forget – they are offering margarita mixes to go!
You can help support Perro Salado by ordering takeout or purchasing gift cards.*
*Gift cards are available for purchase by calling (401) 619-4777. You can pick up your gift card at the restaurant or have it delivered to your home.
Here are two items we love from Perro Salado’s food and drink menu:
Sticky Pork Ribs
spicy, sweet and delicious
Blood Orange Margarita
secret ingredients – but ask for their margarita mixes to go!
