This is our third week featuring one local, Rhode Island eatery each week. We will share each eatery’s background and a little bit about the owners and operators. Most importantly, we will be sharing a link to purchase their gift cards. If you are able to support local eateries at this time, we encourage you to purchase their gift cards online and/or order takeout.
This is a very difficult time for the restaurant industry and we are seeing many of our restaurant partners and friends struggle to keep their businesses. By featuring one local eatery each week, we hope to support and uplift some of our partners and friends. No matter where you live, local eateries bring so much vibrancy to our communities.
Welcome to Stoneacre Brasserie
Christopher Bender, Director of Operations and a JWU graduate and David Crowell, General Manager, are industry veterans. They worked previously at XO Cafe in Providence and worked together at NYC’s Mas (Farmhouse) and Mas (La Grillade.) Christopher and David were clearly influenced by the French-inspired, New American local organic cuisine of Mas. In 2013, they partnered to open Stoneacre Tapas.
After the success of their much smaller restaurant, Stoneacre Tapas, they opened Stoneacre Brasserie in 2017. They dreamed of it becoming the neighborhood restaurant Newport was waiting for. The former Yesterday’s location in Washington Square was exactly what they were looking for – 5,000 sq. ft. of open space, high ceilings, meticulously designed and expertly appointed French-meets-modern industrial design with a Newport influence.
Featuring a small and ever changing seasonal menu, they seek out meats and produce from local farmers, butchers, and fishermen who follow the same high environmental guidelines. Their wine list is cultivated to highlight boutique French wine producers, and they take great pride in their house-made cocktail trimmings. Their menu changes daily to feature the richest and brightest seasonal flavors.
During the Coronavirus, Stoneacre made the decision to close to the public. After halting their takeout orders, they began providing free “family meals” to hospitality workers in Newport. Every Wednesday and Saturday, they prepare enough food to feed 300 people in the hospitality community. They plan to continue the program until the end of the quarantine period or until they can no longer financially support the program.
You can help Stoneacre continue this amazing program for Newport’s hospitality workers. As you know, many hospitality workers are either furloughed or laid off. While their industry is in limbo, many cannot or are struggling to make ends meet. Stoneacre’s family meal program provides fresh, nutritious and delicious meals to hospitality workers and their families. It’s a very valuable and meaningful initiative for our community.
Let’s pay it forward and support this program by buying gift certificates to Stoneacre Brasserie.
Here are three items from Stoneacre’s food and drink menu we love:
Sweet Potato Cavatelli with local mushrooms, pea greens & pepitas
Jane Pickens Newport Gin, Aperol, Elderflower, Citrus & Bubbles
Hazelnut Milk Chocolate Mousse Cocoa streusel & salted caramel
