We hate to pick favorites, but September may just be our favorite month. It’s not too hot, not too cold. Summer still lingers, but fall is in the air. September is our farewell to summer, so get out and enjoy these 12 things to do in Rhode Island (including a Rhode Island Rest Food Tour!) in these last days of summer.

Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival September 21 – 24
The Newport Mansions are the perfect backdrop for this wine and food festival. Festival highlights include a Two-Day Grand Tasting with hundreds of wines, Sunday Jazz Brunch, and the Wine & Rosecliff Gala. Celebrity and local chefs present demonstrations and seminars. This four-day event is the perfect way to treat yo’self. Whether you enjoy all four days or just one event, it’ll be a grand event. Enjoy the gorgeous, historic architecture of The Elms, Rosecliff, and Marble House. Sip wine and savor food from around the world.

Pawtucket Arts Festival Month of September
Now, this is something we can really get into – celebrating Rhode Island’s art scene all September long! Pawtucket Arts Festival is throughout September and includes over a dozen events. Most events are free and the full list can be found here. We would recommend checking out Slater Park Fall Festival on September 9 and 10. It’s a free and family-friendly event with the RI Philharmonic Pops, open air market, public art, and kid-friendly activities. Check out Aurea, a Rhode Island chamber ensemble, on September 10. Aurea: Of Nature Composed explores the intersection of science, nature, and the arts. It’s a free event at Slater Mill.

Newport International Boat Show September 14 – 17
The Newport International Boat Show is one of the largest and most prestigious boat shows in the country. Newport is known for its boating and yachting scene, so it’s the perfect place to party. Hundreds of domestic and international companies, from power boats to sail boats, come to Newport. If you love boats or are interested in boating, this event is for you. There are seminars for novice and experienced boaters. Learn hands-on with power boating and sailboat courses. “Ooo” and “ahhh” at some of the most beautiful boats in the world. We would suggest going to the Newport Wooden Boat Show to admire some of the more historic and classic boats.

Together for Peace: Peace Fest RI September 23
Peace Fest RI is the highlight of the Rhode Island Month of Peace. Come together and join like-minded folks for a day of music and community. Together for Peace: Peace Fest RI is a free event at Burnside Park in Providence. There will be children’s entertainment, an Indigenous Heritage Celebration, events honoring immigrants and refugees, an award presentation, and the Peace Walk. It will be a day for learning and appreciation. In a sometimes difficult world, Peace Fest is an oasis. Celebrate your neighbors and learn their stories. It will be a day to remember.
Together for Peace: Peace Fest RI is Saturday, September 23 from 1 pm – 4 pm. Admission is free. Burnside Park is located at 40 Kennedy Plaza in Providence, Rhode Island.
Cars & Coffee at Chateau-sur-Mer September 9
Cars & Coffee at Chateau-sur-Mer is organized by the Preservation Society of Newport County and the Audrain Automobile Museum. It is one of the more unique Car & Coffee events as its backdrop is the historic Chateau-sur-Mer mansion. Walk the beautiful grounds while sipping some joe and admiring the cars.
Cars & Coffee at Chateau-sur-Mer is Saturday, September 9 from 8 am – 10 am. Admission is free. Chateau-sur-Mer is located at 474 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island.

Newport Mansion Tag Sale September 2-3
The Newport Mansion Tag Sale may be the best sale ever. After 40 years, a family is downsizing and selling a ton of great items. There will be art, collectibles, antiques, and furnishings. An added bonus is that the tag sale is at “Snug Harbor,” which is a gorgeous home built in 1877.
Be sure to get there early to get the best pick of everything this once-in-a-lifetime sale has to offer!
The Newport Mansion Tag Sale is at “Snug Harbor,” located at 328 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island. The Tag Sale is Saturday, September 2 and Sunday, September 3. Times are 9 am – 4 pm. No parking on the premises.
Early Bird Admission is a $10 donation to Newport Theater & Performing Arts Center. Early Birds get first access to sale on Saturday, 7 am – 9 am.
30th Annual Apple Festival
September 16 – 17
September means fall and fall means apples! Celebrate the start of fall at the 30th Annual Apple Festival at Johnston Memorial Park. This annual festival draws over 5,000 people. They must be able to smell the apple pies! It is two days of fun, family, music, laughter, and apples. At the festival, there is a kids zone, apple pie baking contest, live entertainment, pony rides, and carnival rides.
It is free to compete in the apple pie baking contest, so jump in and share that age-old family recipe!
30th Annual Apple Festival is Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17. The festival is 10 am – 6 pm on Saturday and 10 am – 5 pm on Sunday.

Rhode Island Calamari Festival September 9
Did you know that calamari is Rhode Island’s official state appetizer? The Rhode Island Calamari Festival is in celebration of the yummy appetizer. Narragansett is home to the second largest fishing fleet in New England, making it the perfect location.
Local restaurants compete for Best Overall, Most Inventive, and Most Spirited Team. Vote for your favorite in each category. If you aren’t interested in the calamari tasting, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy. Live music, cash bar, food trucks, shopping, and kid activities are enjoyable for the whole family.
Rhode Island Calamari Festival is Saturday, September 9 from 11 am – 6 pm. The festival is at Veterans Park located at 10 Memorial Park, Ocean Road in Narragansett, Rhode Island.
Admission is $10 per person. Kids under 12 are free.
Ocean State Oyster Festival September 23
If calamari isn’t your thing, the Ocean State Oyster Festival has you covered. This festival is about more than just eating, it’s about learning and preserving. The Ocean State Oyster Festival aims to “raise awareness of, and celebrate, Rhode Island’s aquaculture industry.” The festival partnered with Save the Bay to educate and raise awareness. Learn about Rhode Island’s history of oyster farming and what the future holds.
Admission to the Ocean State Oyster Festival is $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Kids under 12 are free. General admission includes a half dozen oysters and choice of beverage. Additional oyster and drink tickets will be available. There will also be live music, food trucks, kids activities, culinary exhibitors, and a shucking contest.
Ocean State Oyster Festival is Saturday, September 23 from 1 pm to 7 pm. September’s Oyster Festival is located at Riverwalk Park, South Water Street in Providence, Rhode Island.
Raw Wine at The Steel Yard September 16
Raw wine is all-natural, baby. Raw wine is made without chemicals and with minimal technology. There are over 80 natural wines to sip and savor at the Raw Wine event. It is a unique event in Rhode Island – there is no other time or place to enjoy raw wine in Rhode Island. The wine tasting is accompanied by small bites from Oberlin, Narragansett Creamery, Seven Stars Bakery, North Bakery, Bywater, and Fortnight. There will also be more food options available on site.
The wine tasting is the event’s star, but there are also educational seminars presented by natural wine importers and experts.
Raw Wine at The Steel Yard is Saturday, September 16 at 6 pm until 9 pm. There is a First Sip Special that starts 5 pm – 6 pm. Tickets to the event start at $50 and are available here.

WaterFire Full Lightings September 3, 23, and 30
This list would not be complete without mention of the three full WaterFire lightings this month. Each lighting is unique. Walk around and enjoy the vendors before the full lighting at sunset. Grab a bite to eat at one of the food vendors and enjoy the ambiance. If you haven’t been to WaterFire before, it’s a must-see event.
