It’s been a little while since our last spotlight, but these two spots were definitely worth the wait. North Bakery in Providence and Newport Lobster Shack in (you guessed it!) Newport are two destinations in their own right. We are pretty stoked to have them on our Downcity Providence and Newport Neighborhood Food Tours.

North Bakery 70 Battey Street and 2 Kennedy Plaza in Providence, Rhode Island
North Bakery defines itself is a non-traditional bakery and bar. Fresh local ingredients are used to create sweet and savory combinations – a mosaic of flavors exploding in your mouth! North Bakery offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, and sweets in both locations, however, the satellite location in Kennedy Plaza has a more limited menu. Their hours are pretty perfect for working professionals passing through. We’ll post those down a little further.
North Bakery is the sister to North Restaurant, which is also in Providence. The brilliant mastermind between the two Norths is James Mark. James Mark has been hailed as a rising star chef, but he’s been in the game for a while. He started working on the line at McCormick & Schmick’s and cemented his career in the Momofuku empire. He took a life and career-changing trip to Asia, which can be seen in some of North’s offerings. Their signature Dan Dan Noodles are legendary! Like most of our food tour partners, North sources fresh and local ingredients. In fact, James Mark and his partners, Tim Shulga and John Chester make it their priority to build relationships with their purveyors. The menu (at North Bakery and North Restaurant) is revolving but is often low on the meat and high on the veggies. They use techniques like pickling and fermentation to prolong seasonal offerings. The North trio are every socially and economically conscientious. A while back they had to make menu price increases to provide their staff with living wages and to continue sourcing the best local foods. It was well worth the price bump if you ask us. One of the important takeaways about North is that it’s a team all the way. No matter the location, everyone works as a cohesive unit. That philosophy has allowed for North to expand and successfully grow into what it is today. In fact, there’s a pretty new development in the works for North Restaurant. As of early fall, North Restaurant is moving into The Dean Hotel. The move will allow for North to entertain and feed more people. The move brings North Restaurant from a neighborhood restaurant to a downtown hot spot.
North Restaurant is currently located (until early fall 2017) at 3 Luongo Memorial Square in Providence, Rhode Island. They are open every day for dinner, 5:30 pm – 12 midnight.
Take a trip to North Bakery’s Battey Street location for dishes and treats that will make your eyes pop with unusual combos. Their hours are 7 am – 6 pm, Monday – Wednesday; 7 am – 11 pm, Thursday – Sunday. The 2 Kennedy Plaza location is open every day 7 am – 6 pm.

150 Long Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island
New England is known for its fresh-off-the-boat seafood and Newport Lobster Shack delivers. Literally. They will deliver live Rhode Island-caught lobsters and crabs straight to your doorstep within 24 hours. Unless you happen to live in Hawaii or Alaska, then you’ll need to come on down to Lil Rhody!
The Shack was built in 2009 to sell Newport Fishermen Co-Op’s daily catches. They fish off of Aquidneck Island year-round and provide visitors with freshly caught lobsters, crab, and conch! When you buy from Newport Lobster Shack, the proceeds go directly to the fishermen. No middleman! From sea to table. It’s a win-win for the customers and the fishermen. Each boat in the Newport Lobster Shack fleet is independently owned. The fishermen catch lobster, Sand Crab, Rock Crab, Jonah Crab, and conch right off the Island. After the daily catch, they bring it back to The Shack where customers can have it cooked or bring it back home to the steamer. If you are a seafood newbie, the team at Newport Lobster Shack will help you become a pro in no time.
One of their most helpful resources is The Fishermen’s Table cookbook. Laura Blackwell is the author and she also happens to be married to one of the fishermen. Inside, she shares classic New England seafood recipes and tons of seafood knowledge. For example, there are many different types of New England lobster. “New Shells” have just molted their shells, making their meat tender and their shells easier to peel. “Hard Shells” have well-developed shells that make for firm meat. They’re the ones you have to use tools to crack open. “Chickens” are the smallest legal size, weighing under 1 1/4 pounds. No matter the name, they’re all yummy!
Besides fresh seafood, Newport Lobster Shack offers some awesome pre-made dishes in their on site trailer. Steamed lobster dinners, lobster rolls, lobster strips and bites (like chicken nuggets, but lobster!) Our mouths are watering just thinking of all the seaside deliciousness we would devour!
Newport Lobster Shack is located on the historic Long Wharf Pier, overlooking both the fishing working docks and luxury marinas in Newport Harbor.
Newport Lobster Shack Live Market is open daily 10 am – 6 pm. Their kitchen is open Friday and Saturday, 11:30 am – 8 pm; Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 11:30 am – 7 pm. The kitchen is closed on Wednesdays.
