August is jammed pack, and by that we also mean there is literally a lot of jammin’ going on musically in Rhode Island. Visitors from all over the world flock here for the beaches and lobster rolls. The days are long and the nights perfect for movies under the stars and bonfires. Our small state is packed with fresh faces, good food, groovy tunes and activities day and night.
We’ve put together a variety of events to enjoy this August in Rhode Island. The month will go by in the blink of an eye, so mark your calendars and soak in the summertime fun!

RWP Pops Night Providence, Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra is performing a free concert at Roger Williams Park on Friday, August 4. It’s sure to be a magical night. August nights in RI are some of the best. The orchestra will be performing favorites from Star Wars and classics like 1812 Overture. Bring a blanket or beach chair and an appetite! The food trucks from Food Truck Friday will be there for the special event.
RWP Pops Night is Friday, August 4 from 7 pm to 9 pm. The rain date is Saturday, August 5.
New England Lobsterbake: Newport International Polo Series Portsmouth, Rhode Island
Get your lobster bibs ready for Saturday, August 5! This super yummy lobster bake takes place after the Newport vs. Mexico polo match. It’s a traditional lobster bake with fresh and local seafood. However, if seafood isn’t your favorite, there are plenty of other options. The menu includes Rhode Island “clear broth” quahog chowder, local sweet corn on the cob, barbecued chicken, 1 1/4 pound Rhode Island lobster, and sliced watermelon. Yum! If you’re not from New England, an authentic lobster bake is the best way to get a real taste of the local food.

Rhode Island International Film Festival

Indulge your inner film critic. The Rhode Island International Film Festival is August 8 – 13. The Opening Night Gala is a PPAC on Tuesday, August 8 at 7 pm. Great American Solar Eclipse at Frosty Drew Observatory
Charlestown, Rhode Island
Whether you’re a child, an adult or somewhere in between, the upcoming solar eclipse is just plain cool. From 1 pm – 4 pm on August 21, North America will experience an eclipse of the sun. Unfortunately, Rhode Island won’t experience a full eclipse. However, we will see up to 65.98% of the sun eclipsed! The maximum eclipse is at exactly 2:47 pm, when the moon will eclipse 65.98% of the sun.
This is the first full solar eclipse North America has experienced since 1918. In celebration, the Frosty Dew Observatory in Charlestown is having an all-day solar eclipse event. Solar telescopes will be set up for observers to experience the eclipse. Learn all about the solar eclipse from the experts.
The Great American Solar Eclipse at Frosty Drew Observatory has a suggested $1 donation for admission. The Observatory is located at 62 Park Lane, Ningret Park in Charlestown, Rhode Island.

2nd Annual Warren Folk’s Fest Warren, Rhode Island
Warren Folk’s Festival is a free and fun event with food, music, and art. The Collaborative, 30 Cutler Street and Chomp Kitchen & Drinks organize the festival. Local artists share their art and there is, of course, lots of cool music. There is also kid-friendly games and a craft table. Comedians from Rhode Island and beyond come together to share some laughs along with great food from Eli’s Kitchen, Balasco’s Pizzeria, and more provide the food. There’s even a craft beer tent featuring Lagunitas Brewing Co., Whalers Brewing Company, and more.
This is an energy infused event that benefits The Collaborative’s mission to bring meaningful and fun events in Warren and the East Bay.
The 2nd Annual Warren Folk’s Fest is Sunday, August 6, 2 pm – 8 pm at 30 Cutler Street in Warren, Rhode Island.
Wet Paint at Newport Art Museum
Newport, Rhode Island
Wet Paint is an annual community art event that brings together artists of all ages and abilities to benefit the Newport Art Museum. On the morning of Saturday, August 12 artists gather at the Museum to have their canvasses stamped. Then the real work begins! Artists explore the Newport area, searching out their subjects. Whether it be the coastline, the mansions, or downtown, artists paint their chosen subject. Artists bring their paintings – still wet – back to the Museum to be installed.
It is free to submit a work of art and artists receive free admission to the Opening Reception for themselves and a guest. Last year’s artists ranged from 5 months old to 99 years old. Bring your own art supplies – crayons, paints, charcoal, colored pencils, whatever! Wet Paint is a great event for all ages and abilities. Theatre by the Sea – the Producers Wakefield, Rhode Island
Theatre by the Sea is performing The Producers August 16 – September 10. The theatre is a historic playhouse on Cards Pond. It’s a gorgeous theatre that puts on Broadway quality musicals. It’s “Broadway in a Barn!” Theatre by the Sea performs four shows every year. Seeing a show at Theatre by the Sea is a unique experience.

Augtoberfest 2017 Pawtucket, Rhode Island
Foolproof’s annual Augtoberfest is Saturday, August 5. Augtoberfest is not only fun to say, it’s super fun to attend! There are food trucks, an inflated slip & slide, games, and beer (of course!) Foolproof will release their special Augtoberfest festbier just for the event. This year’s event is split into two sessions. Session #1 is 1:30 pm – 4 pm. Session #2 is 5 pm – 7:30 pm. There are a variety of ticket packages available. It is a 21+ event, but designated driver tickets are $5.

AS220 Foo Fest

AS220 Foo Fest is an annual block party that people of all ages look forward to every year. This year’s Foo Fest is Saturday, August 12, 1 pm – 1 am. It’s 12 hours of art, performances, food and drink, kid and family-friendly activities, and DIY technology. Foo Fest puts Providence’s art scene on full display. The musical lineup is stacked with 22 performers that cross different musical genres. All ages activities include interactive performances and demos. Food vendors serve up tacos, vegan ice cream, grilled cheese, and much more.

Waterfront Reggae Festival East Providence, Rhode Island
The 8th Annual Waterfront Reggae Festival brings the vibeat Bold Point Park in Providence. The festivities start at noon on Saturday, August 12. Relax by the water and enjoy ten hours of live music. There will be food and drinks available throughout the day at the Reggae Pit. Enjoy some Friskie Fries, the beautiful park, and relaxing reggae. Tickets for the Waterfront Reggae Festival are $41 in advance and $51 the day of festival.
Newport Jazz Festival Newport, Rhode Island
The Newport Jazz Festival is an annual event, taking place this year Friday, August 4 to Sunday, August 6. The festival is at Fort Adams, which makes for a stunning backdrop. There are three stages with continuous performances, lots of yummy food vendors, and craft vendors to explore. A lot of thought is put into the Newport Jazz Fest lineup and it can be found here. Blues and BBQ Festival East Providence, Rhode Island
RI Waterfront Events is putting together a bevy of concerts this year in it’s highly touted new location Bold Point Park and the Blues and BBQ Festival closes out the month of August with a raw mix of bands. Delivering a full day of jamming the festival will include Kenny Wayne Shepard Band, Cannibal Riders, The Silks, Cee Cee & The Riders and more. Combined with some good ole’ fashioned BBQ of the savory, smokey kind just pull up a chair and enjoy the day, August 26th is looking like a day to kick back and enjoy the tunes, General Admission tickets start at $18.75 and up.
