April is the kick-off to Spring. We’ll be lucky if we get a full week of sunshine and 50 degrees. But we’ll take whatever we can get as long as there isn’t snow on the ground!
Now that the weather is getting nicer, we all feel the call to be more active. As Rhode Islanders, we want to get out there and have fun! That’s where this handy list comes in. Here is April’s Lil Rhody Roundup – 10 Things To Do in April!

The tour season runs until November, but a food tour in Spring is just the thing! Gateway to Spring at Blithewold Gardens General Admission

The Blithewold Gardens are currently open, but the Gateway to Spring starts on April 1. General Admission tickets to the Blithewold includes a self-guided tour of two floors in the Blithewold Mansion and unlimited strolling through the gardens and grounds. This is one of the most beautiful spots in Bristol. There is plenty to explore and beauty to admire. Gateway to Spring is Blithewold‘s annual welcome to Spring. Over 55,000 daffodils bloom to greet visitors and usher in the first signs of Spring. Blithewold is a 33-acre seaside estate, so visitors enjoy the earth and the ocean. The scent of flowers intermingles with the fresh, salty ocean air. Needless to say, it’s one of our favorite scents.
Blithewold is located at 101 Ferry Road in Bristol, RI. The Mansion is open April 1 – October 15. April – May the Mansion is open Tuesday-Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. June – October the Mansion is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday 10 am to 3 pm. The Gardens and Grounds are open year-round. Hours are Monday-Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 10 am to 3 pm.
Hope & Main is the incubator for many of Rhode Island’s up-and-coming food vendors including PVD Donuts (a graduated member), Tom’s Bao Bao, and Ellie’s Bakery. Hope & Main is the hot spot for all things food. They regularly host classes and special events. There’s always something cooking! One of their upcoming special events is Build Your Own Edible Terrarium. Farmer Doug Higley of Freedom Food Farm is instructing the class on how to build an herb terrarium AND keep it alive! Keeping it alive is always the tricky part. Guests will be provided with organic potting materials and a basil plant. Guests are asked to bring a clean 8-12 inch glass vessel (a vase, fish bowl, jumbo jar, ect.), decorative trinkets, and 1-4 young edible plants to incorporate. This class is adults-only and some light refreshments will be provided. It’s also BYOB!
Hope & Main is located at 691 Main Street in Warren, RI. The Edible Terrarium event is on Saturday, April 21 5:30 pm – 8 pm.
Bottomless Coffee at Cru Cafe Free refills all day long
Cru Cafe in Newport serves yummy breakfast and lunch. The food is affordable and all of the ingredients are sourced locally. They are always BYOB and there’s a liquor store right across the street. It’s a great place to sit and take a breather. Plus they have bottomless coffee! If you order a coffee, leave and come back, the coffee is still free! Did we mention that the coffee happens to be delicious?
Cru Cafe is located at 1 Casino Terrace in Newport, RI. Cru Cafe is open Monday-Saturday 8 am – 5 pm and Sunday 8 am – 3pm.

Newport Daffodil Days Festival Most events are Free
The annual Newport Daffodil Days Festival is a fun and cheerful way to welcome Spring. 681,750 bursts of daffodils will fill Newport. This year’s festival is April 15 – 23. There are over 20 events! Each day features different events, most of which are free. Our favorites include the Daffy Doggies on Parade and the Annual East Egg Hunt & Brunch. Daffy pins are $5 and are available for purchase at Bowen’s Wharf and the Discover Newport’s Visitor Center. A daffy pin will get you special deals at participating Newport shops, restaurants, and attractions.

URI’s theatre department is performing the stage version of Great Gatsby this April. It’s a new way to see this classic drama and it is sure to be a great show! Spring is an especially good time for this performance since it’s a dynamic and romantic story. For a synopsis of the Great Gatsby, click here. Shows will be in the Robert E. Will Theatre.

Live Bait: True Stories From Real People $7/person
Every first Friday of the month, Live Bait livens up the scene. Live Bait is Rhode Island’s only true-life, adult storytelling show. Real people share their true stories. Every month, there’s a new theme. April’s theme is “Unfinished Business.” Anyone with a real story that fits the month’s theme is welcome to share at Live Bait. That night just put your name into the fish bowl and tell your story once it’s picked. However, there are some rules. No notes, no rants, no stand-up routines, and there is a six-minute limit. This month’s Live Bait is on Friday, April 7.
Live Bait: True Stories from Real People occurs every first Friday of the month. April’s event is at 10 pm on Friday, April 7.

Robot Block Party Free
Robot Block Party is exactly what it sounds like. Robots and robot-lovers fill the Pizzitola Center on Hope Street. There are hands-on activities, demonstrations, and exhibits of robots used in research, education, work, and play. The event is put on by Rhode Island Students of the Future, the Humanity-Centered Robotics Initiative, and the Department of Computer Science at Brown University. People of all ages and backgrounds gather to share their love of robots. It’s a good time all around.
Robot Block Party is Sunday, April 30, 11 am – 4 pm. Admission is free.

Rhode Island Antiques Mall Free… unless you find a treasure
The Rhode Island Antiques Mall in Pawtucket is easily one of the best antique malls in New England. You could make a whole day out of digging through their treasures. The best time to go would be April 22-23 during their Dealer Day Storewide Sales Event when everything in the store will be on sale. However, they have great deals year-round and there is always something good to bring home.

The Duck & Bunny is the coziest, snuggliest restaurant in Providence. That’s why they call it The Snuggery! Just being in the restaurant gives you the warm and fuzzies. The restaurant has scrumptious crepes, yummy cupcakes, cocktails, and more. They’re known for throwing the occasional shin dig. Their adorable outside patio is open during the Spring and Summer. This Spring, they are celebrating Easter with a fun-filled day on Monday, April 17.

April is definitely going to be a good month – we can feel it! There’s a lot going on and there is sure to be more fun to be had. Not included in this blog are some great food and drink festivals going on this month. If you’re feelin’ hungry, check them out!
Truck Stop: A Festival of Street Eats is on Friday, April 28. Truck Stop benefits the RI Food Bank and features food from 20+ food trucks!
Newport Craft Beer Festival is also on Friday, April 28. Brewers from all over the country gather to celebrate Newport’s craft beer scene.
Eat Drink RI Festival is April 27 – 29. The Eat Drink RI Festival is HUGE. You’ll be occupied for three days full of food and fun.
