We’ve shared several upcoming holiday markets, but there are many more opportunities to shop local this holiday season. In addition to holiday markets, we’ve included family-friendly activities, Christmas festivities, and plenty more to keep you busy all season long.

Celebrate Downcity 2018

The shops and restaurants on Westminster Street will be abuzz during Celebrate Downcity 2018. Support your local shops and restaurants while kicking off the holiday season. Take a Polaroid photo with Santa, sip on hot cocoa and sweet treats from Wright’s Dairy Farm, grab some festive Friskie Fries, stop by the kids’ craft table, and enjoy the community atmosphere of Downcity.

Rhode Island Author Expo 2018

Support and meet your local authors! New England is home to so many creative minds. The Rhode Island Author Expo is the perfect opportunity to meet your favorite local author or discover a new one. All genres will be represented at the expo and there will be 100+ New England authors to meet and greet. A full list of exhibiting authors is available here. Authors will be signing copies of their books, so be sure to pick up something extra-special for the extra-special person in your life. 2018 PVD Winter Lights Market & Christmas Tree Lightings
Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy

Providence will be a-light during the 2018 PVD Winter Lights Market & Christmas Tree Lightings. The Winter Lights Market will feature an artisan and culinary market hosted by Eat Drink RI. Saturday’s tree lighting will take place at the Alex and Ani City Center at 5:30 pm. Inbetween events there will be performances for the whole family to enjoy. Bristol Tree Lighting & Grand Illumination

Bristol is an adorable town all-year round, but it somehow gets even more adorable during the holidays. The Bristol Tree Lighting & Grand Illumination is a festive and family-friendly event to start the season. In addition to the tree lighting, there will be musical performances and free pictures with Santa for the kiddos.

It’s a Wonderful Life: A 1940’s Radio Play

Begin your holiday season with a rendition of a Christmas classic. It’s a Wonderful Life: A 1940’s Radio Play is being produced by JMG Theater and the Bristol Theatre Company. “This beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve. Complete with radio commercial jingles and live Foley sound effects, this show is great for family and friends, young and old and everyone in between.”

Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for seniors, children, and students. You can purchase your tickets here or at the door.

The Polar Express Train Ride

It doesn’t get more magical than a ride on the Polar Express during Christmastime. The Polar Express Train Ride is a three-hour immersive experience for the whole family to enjoy. Hop aboard a real-life train to enjoy readings of classic children’s Christmas stories, sing-alongs, hot chocolate served in souvenir mugs, cookies, games, and a special visit from Santa. During his visit, Santa will personally deliver a gift to each child. At the end of your trip, stay for a photo with Santa and his crew of helpers.

Touro Synagogue 255th Anniversary Open House and Chanukah Party

The Touro Synagogue 255th Anniversary Open House and Chanukah Party are part of Christmas in Newport grand celebration. The Open House is free and open to the public. Explore the synagogue’s magnificent interiors and explore the exhibits at the visitors center. When you are done exploring, head to the patio for cider and cookies. After the Open House, stick around for the Chanukah Party at 4 pm. The Chanukah Party is free, but reservations are required, e-mail to reserve your spot. During the party, there will be a family concert and candle lighting. Afterward, there will be latkes and more holiday fun at the Levi Gale House. Enjoy one or both events as part of Christmas in Newport.

We can’t get enough of the holiday street celebrations in Providence! Head to the East Side of Providence to the Hope Street Winter Stroll 2018. Hope Street is home to a number of fantastic local shops, including Frog & Toad, Palomino and Stock Culinary Goods. Get some holiday shopping under your belt and then head over to the food trucks for a bite to eat. Santa will be making an appearance for the kiddos and there will be entertainment (including fire jugglers!) for the whole family to enjoy.

The Craft & Kitsch Winter Market

This may be one of the cutest names for a holiday market. The Craft & Kitsch Winter Market not only sounds adorable but is jampacked with adorable items ready for gifting. There will be a mix of more than 28 vendors selling handmade items, art, crafts, curated vintage, and tasty treats.

Art Providence Holiday Show

Saturday, December 8 from 10 am – 6 pm and Sunday, December 9 from 10 am – 5 pm

Whether you’re shopping or looking, the Art Providence Holiday Show is such a fun and easy way to discover new local artists and their works. Around 200 artists from the East Coast will be at the show. Art Providence prides itself on featuring vibrant, high caliber art. Categories include baskets, ceramics, fiber art, furniture, drawings, jewelry, leather goods, mixed media, paintings, and more. While you’re browsing, the kiddos can head to the Kids’ Corner for print-making and crafting.

Single day tickets are available for $8.50. Children 13 and under are free. Tickets are available at the door.

Deck the Trunks with Food Truck Follies
Frerichs Farm
Saturday, December 8 from 9 am – 5:30 pm

Frerichs Farm is partnering up with PVD Food Truck Events to host this very festive event. Deck the Trunks with Food Truck Follies (we dare you to say that five times fast) is hosting the first-of-its-kind Holiday Trunk Trimming Contest. Participants will decorate the trunks of their cars or back of the trucks with holiday lights and decorations. Fifty or more cars will be on display and viewing is free and open to the public. If you want to participate in the Holiday Trunk Trimming Contest, there is a $10 registration fee and you must be registered in advance. In addition to the contest, there will be food trucks, fresh trees, and greenery for sale, and a curated selection of gifts in the Holiday House.

Caroling on Broadway

Caroling on Broadway starts at the Colony House and continues down Broadway. There may be few neighborhood carolers this holiday season, but you can catch groups of carolers in Newport and Providence. Local musician Christopher Carbone, the Thompson Middle School chorus and OBNA will be leading the caroling group along Broadway. All are welcome to participate.

Caroling on Broadway will meet at the Colony House, which is located on Washington Square in Newport, Rhode Island.

13th Annual Cookie Walk

We love a good cookie… or any cookie really, and these are by far the most creative, they even have ugly sweater cookies! The 13th Annual Cookie Walk in Warren is the perfect way to get your cookie fill. Thousands of beautifully decorated cookies will be up for sale by the pound. The event always sells out, so stop by in the morning to get your pick of cookies.

PVD Artisans Holiday Show

Sunday, December 16 from 10 am – 4 pm

Another weekend, another holiday market in Rhode Island. The PVD Artisans Holiday Show will feature 60 local artists selling handmade goods, just in time for buying last-minute gifts. In between shopping, enjoy food and refreshments, enter a giveaway and take a photo with Santa.

Keep this market in mind for your last-minute Christmas celebration needs. The Meet Your Maker Mini Mart has all of your Christmas foodie cravings covered. Hope & Main’s makers will be present for picking up dessert orders, pastries, prepared meals and more. You can even pick up something special for your holiday host or a tough to-buy-for relative. There are so many goodies to choose from!

Downtown Warren will be merrier and bright during the In the Nick of Time Holiday Shopping Stroll. Warren’s downtown merchants will be celebrating with pop-ups all over town, including local and visiting vendors. The restaurants and bars will be open and might even offer a sale or two.

Westside Caroling 2018
West Broadway Neighborhood Association
Sunday, December 23 from 6 pm – 8 pm

This annual sing-along is a true joy. Westside Caroling 2018 has a pre-party at Loie Fuller’s restaurant from 5 pm – 6 pm, where carolers can prep with snacks and socializing. At 6 pm sharp, carolers head out to spread Christmas cheer. The night ends at 8 pm with milk, warm drinks, and cookies at Sin Bakery. Everyone is welcome to join the carolers, even well-behaved dogs. Just remember to dress warmly and come ready to spread some cheer.

Loie Fuller’s is the starting point of the event. It is located at 1455 Westminster in Providence, Rhode Island.
