The beautiful May weather has arrived just in time! That summer itch is upon us and we just need to get out and about and explore. Luckily, there’s plenty to do in Rhode Island this May. We’ve put together this list to keep you busy and having fun all month long.

Food Truck Friday at Roger Williams Park Carousel Village
Providence, Rhode Island

We’re not going to lie – winter was rough without Food Truck Friday! We couldn’t be more excited to welcome them back on May 5. Food Truck Fridays will be at Carousel Village every Friday in May. Admission is free, but there is a super cool VIP option. For $75, you’ll get a 2-hour reserved picnic or banquet table for up to 8 people. It also includes 8 carousel rides and beverage vouchers. Even without the VIP package, you can enjoy the carousel for $2 per ride. There are also pony rides, a bounce house, and train rides until dusk. There’s also awesome live music every week. Almost 20 food trucks will be there on opening night, May 5. Some of our favorites like Friskie Fries, Presto Strange-O Coffee Truck, and Baby’s Bonetown BBQ will be there. With almost 20 food trucks, you’ll be able to pick and choose for the ultimate meal.

Food Truck Friday comes back for the season on Friday, May 5 at Roger Williams Park Carousel Village in Providence. The season opener is 5 pm – 8 pm. Admission is FREE.

Sheep Shearing at Watson Farm
Jamestown, Rhode Island

Watson Farm is a beautiful, coastal farm in Jamestown. The farm was built in 1796 and is still a working family farm. The farm produces 100% grass-fed beef and lamb and wool blankets. The annual Sheep Shearing at Watson Farm is a great family-friendly event. The big day is on Saturday, May 13 from 12 pm – 4 pm. Watch the shearing and visit with the adorable baby lambs! Enjoy a scenic hike along the fields and pastures along Narragansett Bay.

Sheep Shearing at Watson Farm is rain or shine on Saturday, May 13. The festivities are 12 pm – 4 pm. It is free for Historic New England members or $10 per vehicle for non-members. Cash is preferred.

Second Annual Spring Walkabout

This is a great way to explore and enjoy downtown Bristol. Most importantly, it encourages an entire night of shopping locally! There are so many great vendors in downtown Bristol. The Spring Walkabout is a reminder of all that downtown Bristol has to offer.

Bristol’s Second Annual Spring Walkabout is on Friday, May 12. Stroll downtown 5 pm – 9 pm. Participating vendors will offer special promotions.

Basic Perfumery Class – Create Your Own Custom Perfume
Providence, Rhode Island

Providence Perfume Co. offers a wide array of all-natural perfumes. They also have all-natural candles, bath, and body products. Best of all, they offer perfumery classes and parties! They offer classes for all levels of experience. Their Basic Perfumery Class is being offered on Wednesday, May 10. For those very interested in perfumery, they’re offering an intensive class May 20-21.

During the Basic Perfumery Class, you’ll create your own custom, all-natural perfume. The class is $75 per person, but most high-quality perfumes will cost well over this class’ admission. Plus you get to brag to your friends about the new perfume you created!

Providence Perfume Company is located at 13 South Angell Street in Providence. Their Basic Perfumery Class is on Wednesday, May 10 6 pm – 8:15 pm. The cost is $75 per person.

Hope Street Farmers Market
Lippitt Park in East Providence

The farmers market is finally moving outside! The Hope Street Farmers Market migrates outdoors on Saturday, May 6. The market is open on Saturdays during May – October, 9 am – 1 pm. The Providence Artisans Market is also open at Lippitt Park on Saturdays, 10 am – 2 pm. The Saturday markets have a ton of great regular and guest vendors. Food trucks will occasionally stop by as well. You can grab your weekly groceries, coffee, and lunch all in one convenient stop!

Plus you’ll be supporting some of the best local businesses.

The Hope Street Farmers Market is also open on Wednesdays starting May 31. Wednesday market hours are 3 pm – 6 pm.

The Hope Street Farmers Market is located at Lippitt Park in East Providence. Saturday markets are every Saturday, May – October, 9 am – 1 pm. Wednesday markets start May 31 and run from 3 pm – 6 pm.

Taco Fest

Cinco de Mayo might just be our favorite day in May. Just in time for the festivities, Taco Fest is on Saturday, May 6. This is the ultimate taco experience. InDowncity puts on this awesome annual event right on Westminster Street. The best part (other than the yummy tacos) is that Taco Fest is free! Once you’re stuffed full of Mexican goodness, head on over to the Rock n’ Roll Yard Sale, also on Westminster during Taco Fest.

Grilled Pizza + Wine Pairing Class

Easy Entertaining in Providence offers farm-to-table catering and events. One of their upcoming events is a Grilled Pizza + Wine Pairing Class. Grilled pizza is the yummiest meal on a hot spring or summer day! This hands-on class will teach you how to make the perfect grilled pizza. You’ll roll out and grill your own pizza shell before heading on over to the wine bar to learn about wine pairings. The Grilled Pizza + Wine Pairing Class is on Monday, May 22 from 6 pm – 7:30 pm. Tickets are $40 per guest and can be purchased here. It’s recommended that you purchase tickets ahead of time.

Gaspee Days Arts and Crafts Weekend
Narragansett Parkway, Warwick, Rhode Island

The Gaspee Days Arts and Crafts Weekend is an annual event every Memorial Day Weekend. There are over 100 artisans, community groups, and non-profits. There’s a food court filled with festival eats and goodies. There’s live music every day during the festival in Pawtuxet Park. Stroll through Narragansett Parkway, find a one-of-a-kind treasure, enjoy the festival food, and jam out.

Gaspee Days Arts and Crafts Weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, May 27 – 29. Hours are Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28 10 am – 5 pm. Monday, May 29 10 am – 4:30 pm.

May Breakfast
Across Rhode Island

May Breakfast may be Rhode Island’s quirkiest and yummiest tradition. It’s been a tradition for over 150 years! The first May Breakfast occurred at Cranston’s Oak Lawn Community Baptist Church in 1867. For those who don’t know, May Breakfast is held at churches across Rhode Island to benefit ministries and missions. The menus are always filled with Rhode Island staples. Johnny cakes and clam cakes are a must!

What Did Hamilton Drink: Chocolate in the Colonial Period

What Did Hamilton Drink: Chocolate in the Colonial Period is a lecture put on by the Newport Historical Society on Thursday, May 4. The lecture explores chocolate during the Colonial Period. Chocolate has long been an American favorite. Like most couples today, John and Abigail Adams were huge chocolate fans. President George Washington and his wife, Martha, were known to enjoy some chocolate-y goodness. And Alexander Hamilton, of course, was a chocolate lover. Learn about Hamilton’s role in the chocolate economy and the influence of Colonial Newporters.

What Did Hamilton Drink: Chocolate in the Colonial Period is on Thursday, May 4 at the Newport Historical Society Resource Center in Newport. The NHS Resource Center is located at 82 Touro Street in Newport.

The lecture starts at 5:30 and it’s recommended that guests buy tickets ahead of time. General admission is $5 per person or $1 for NHS members, active duty, and retired military.

The 35th Annual Birds & Breakfast at Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown is a great, family-friendly event. This year’s breakfast is on Sunday, May 21. White Horse Tavern chef, Richard Silvia, cooks up a yummy breakfast using organic ingredients donated by local farmers and markets. After breakfast, take a nature walk led by a Norman Bird Sanctuary guide.
